It is important that students and parents understand
that the concentrated study of Music is an Investment in an individuals
self and future. Just as one wouldn't benefit from not contributing
to an investment account or exercising on an irregular basis, one will
likewise not benefit from taking lessons and not practicing on a regular
basis. For those students who have reached their adult years, it is
your responsibility to find the time in your schedules to practice and
to use that practice time to the best of your ability. For those students
who have not reached the
ir
adult years, it is the responsibility of the parents. Parents, this
means you must take an active role in the development of your son or
daughters musical talents by ensuring a quality practice space and the
time in which to use it. To often parents and teachers expect students
to practice on their own. This is just not likely to happen. We would
like to believe that our children love it so much they will just run
into their rooms and practice. But, as you probably already know, most
students do not operate in this fashion. It is your job, and responsibility,
to invest yourself in the long range profits of your child's music learning.
Students do not understand what it has taken adults 20 or 30 years to
learn. In any case, daily practice, commitment to excellence, and consistent
lesson attendance are commitments that come with professional music
lessons.
When a student has taken the time and interest to locate a private instructor
and has committed to a time slot and a weekly lesson, that student has
made a commitment. In the case of adult students this commitment is
their responsibility. If the student is a child/adolescent the responsibility
rests with the parents. Simply stated, the student is expected to select
a time slot in the instructors schedule such that attendance of the
student is consistent and arrival is on time.
