All of our instruments are made with cone 5 clays
and covered with colored Terra Sigillata . Terra Sigillata is a fine particle
clay that can be burnished to create a sheen on the surface. It is one
of the oldest surfaces in ceramics, first developed by the Greeks and
died out around 400AD. This surface has been “re-invented”
by modern potters and used to give the artist a leather hard look on fired
clay. Once the Terra Sigillata has been burnished (polished) a design
is carved into it using various tools (Sgraffito). The piece is then fired
in an electric kiln to Cone 5 (2200 F). The Shakers are finished in the
same manner, but are Raku fired after they have been bisqued to create
a rainbow of colors. The drum’s goat heads are attached after the
final firing using either glue or rings and rope depending on the type
of drum. Both the drums and the dream chimes
are thrown on the potters wheel in either one or two pieces depending
on the size and design. The shakers are hand
built with the aide of a press mold. All of the work is done by hand.
Each of our instruments is a one of a kind creation. We do not mass-produce
designs. We take pride in advertising that we make a drum to fit every
person.
